Yahoo Glue – a richer search experience

Tired of a list of blue links after performing a search? Yahoo! Glue is now in Beta on the India search site, and it shows how search can be enhanced by related content. An example search for “taj mahal“, for instance, pulls up Flickr pictures and a Wikipedia link along with traditional search results. Pretty neat.

Yahoo search has now integrated McAfee’s SiteAdvisor into it’s search engine which means dodgy sites serving up spam and malware are flagged up:

Search results on Yahoo now include the HTML lang attribute which has important consequences for screen readers:

If you do not see the text but you get it read out to you then the pronounciation is very important. Visually impaired surfers use screen readers to tell them what is on the current page, and by defining the language, you make this a lot easier. Screen readers have different voices for different languages with the correct pronounciation rules.

If you are interested in monitoring your online presence, or simply for a laugh, you can be alerted whenever your name is mentioned on a website. Here’s how:

visit Google Alerts
enter your name within double quotes in the Search terms box. e.g. “glen scott”
enter your e-mail address in the Your email box

Now, whenever your name is mentioned in a newly indexed page, you will be e-mailed with the link… fun!
