As part of Yahoo’s plan to open up their search technology to external developers, a new tool called SearchMonkey is now being previewed. SearchMonkey allows you to add data services that can be used to present richer, more useful search results. Sign up for more information:

MySQL: Open Source, mostly.
Interesting shift of focus from Sun/MySQL:
MySQL will start offering some features (specifically ones related to online backups) only in MySQL Enterprise. This represents a substantive change to their development model — previously they have been developing features in both MySQL Community and MySQL Enterprise.
Flickr Code launched
Flickr Code is a “one-stop shop for information, gossip and discussion with the Flickr developer community”. Includes the open source code for the new Flickr Uploadr tool which runs in a XULRunner environment.

“Programmers Wikipedia” Coming Soon
stackoverflow.com is a new project from Joel Spolsky and Jeff Atwood, intended to be “the anti-experts-exchange (minus the nausea-inducing sleaze and quasi-legal search engine gaming) meets wikipedia meets programming reddit”. Worth keeping an eye on…
Useless Mac Applications #1 : Sherlock
Bundled with Mac OS 8.5 – 10.4, the Sherlock search tool became less and less useful as time went by. Apple claimed that Sherlock was “dramatically better than standard web browsers at retrieving and displaying some of the most practical and useful information available on the internet” without ever explaining why. The US-centric content was pretty much useless, and so it always remained a curiosity. That it even made it to OS X was a surprise, it was finally made obsolete by Spotlight and Dashboard and removed completely from 10.5 Leopard. Good riddance!

Update your Facebook, Twitter and IM status from one application

MoodBlast is an excellent little app that allows you to update your status from one place. It currently supports the following services:
- Skype
- iChat
- Adium
- Tumblr
- Pownce
- Jaiku
Unfortunately, MoodBlast is Mac-only, but there is a web application called HelloTxt that looks like it will achieve the same thing.
New Flickr Video feature is a Good Thing
24 hours since the launch of the new video functionality on Flickr, and many members are up in arms. I must admit, when I first heard about the idea of video on Flickr a year ago, I was also sceptical. The photo sharing features were very pure and clean, and I thought that adding video to the mix would just end up diluting the excellent features. But video has been integrated into the site in a very clean and unobtrusive way, so I have no problems with it. The fact is that if you don’t like video clips, then you are not forced to upload or watch them. You can just continue to use the site as before, albeit ignoring the videos that your more creative contacts have chosen to share.
