Using your iPhone abroad is expensive, so to keep costs down make sure you have Data Roaming turned off:
Settings -> General -> Network -> Data Roaming
Furthermore, make sure that auto-checking of email is disabled:
Settings -> Mail -> Auto-Check
Finally, turn off visual voicemail before you travel:
Dial 1760 to switch the divert to voicemail off and dial 1750 to switch on the divert to voicemail.

A few weeks ago, we began talking about the new Yahoo! Search open platform. Today, we’re releasing more details about two important components of the initiative — the developer platform as well as our support of a number of semantic web standards.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the downloads are set to appear on iTunes after the band settled earlier disputes with their label EMI over royalties and with iTunes owners Apple over the use of the name.
This is very exciting news as it means – finally – the Beatles back catalogue will be available in a newly digitally remastered form. Currently, only the Yellow Submarine Songtrack CD album from 1999 is fully remixed from the original multitrack tapes. The iTunes deal means that the every last song lot will sound sparkly and new… and I can’t wait to revisit them!
Joe Weizenbaum, the creator of one of the earliest examples of Artificial Intelligence, has died. Weizenbaum created ELIZA, the “virtual therapist”, which I’ve played around with in various implementations over the years. It inspired me to investigate Lisp, so for that reason alone I hold Weizenbaum in high regard.
